Lahey Leads Marist Volleyball To 3-0 Triumph Over Quinnipiac

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) had a team-high 16 kills to go along with a .400 hitting percentage, leading the Marist volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-17) victory over Quinnipiac in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match at McCann Arena on Sunday afternoon. 

Sophomore Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) had eight kills, while junior Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.) had six kills and 11 digs. Senior Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) had 29 assists, three kills and six digs. Junior Mackenzie Stephens (Holand, Mich.) had four kills and two blocks, and junior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) had two kills and three total blocks. Junior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) led Marist with 14 digs while freshman Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had nine to go along with two aces. It marked the ninth consecutive match with at least one ace for Millington, who entered the weekend ranked sixth nationally in aces per set.

Marist wasted no time in the first set, jumping out to a quick 10-2 lead. Stephens, Lahey, Shaw, and Jones all had a kill to lead to the early run and Jones added a service ace. Still leading 16-7, Marist continued to pull away with two service aces, one by Gilbert the other by Russo.  A big kill by Lahey ended the first set, giving the Red Foxes the 25-13 win.

The second set started off much closer, and was tied at 12 apiece. The Red Foxes pulled away with a 4-0 run, with two kills each by Stephens and Lahey to give Marist a 20-13 lead.  Another kill by Stephens and multiple errors by Quinnipiac gave Marist the set two victory, 25-16.    

The momentum carried over into the third set, as the Red Foxes used three kills by Lahey and one by Gilbert to jump out to an 8-5 lead. In the middle of the set, Marist went on a 4-0 run lead by two service aces by Millington to lead, 16-9.  Marist controlled the end of the set with five kills and two service aces to prevail, 25-17.

Marist is now 13-7 overall and 7-3 in the MAAC; Quinnipiac fell to 4-18 overall and 2-8 in the MAAC. For Quinnipiac, Brittanie Robinson finished with five kills, six digs and two blocks.

The Red Foxes will hit the road next weekend, traveling to Iona on Saturday for a 1 p.m. scheduled start. On Sunday, the team will travel to Manhattan, with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.
