Marist Volleyball Sweeps Manhattan

The Marist volleyball team was victorious today in a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-19, 26-24) over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) competitor Manhattan.  The Red Foxes are now 8-4 in the MAAC and have an overall record of 14-8.

Junior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich) led the team offensively with 13 kills and three blocking assists.  While sophomore Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Co.) had six kills and sophomore Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) had seven. Junior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) had four kills and five blocking assists.  Senior Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) has 31 assists along with four kills one service ace. Junior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) had a team high 16 digs while freshman Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had eight digs along with three service aces.     

The first set started off as a close game.  The Red Foxes started their run off with kills by Brady, Lahey, and Stephens, taking a 11-8 lead.  After more back and forth play, Marist went on a 3-0 run off a big kill by Lahey, giving the Red Foxes a 15-11 lead.  The Jaspers fought back, going on two scoring runs bring the score to 19-18.  Millington came through for the Red Foxes with two service aces while Stephens had two kills, giving Marist a 25-19 win in set one.

The Red Foxes jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, with kills by Shaw, Stephens, and Jones.  Manhattan fought back again to tie the game up 11-11 in the middle of the second set.  Marist went on a big 6-0 run, led by two kills a piece by Jones and Stephens to bring Marist's lead to 17-13. After multiple errors by the Jaspers and a service ace by Brady, Marist won set two 25-19.

The third set remained close up until the end.  The Red Foxes remained close early in the set off two kills by Brady, only trailing 9-7.  Marist went on a 4-0 run giving them their first lead of the game 13-12.  The Red Foxes kept their momentum going to lead in the middle of the set, 18-13, off kills by Stephens and Lahey.  Leading towards the end set 23-18, the Jaspers came back making the score 23-22.  After a Marist time out the score was tied 24-24, Stephens had a giant kill followed by an error by the Jasper the Red Foxes won the third set 26-24. 

Next Saturday, Nov. 2, the Red Foxes return home to play Siena at 4 pm at McCann Arena. Admission is free and open to the public.
