Men's Lacrosse Defeats Sacred Heart 15-12 Behind Begley's Five Goals

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - On the back of a five goal, one assist performance by sophomore Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.), the Marist men's lacrosse team came away with a 15-12 victory over Sacred Heart Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.

Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored three goals for his second consecutive hat trick to start the season. Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) Gannon Osborn (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and  freshman Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) all finished with three points. Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) and Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) each added single goals. Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) made 10 saves in net to notch his second win of the season. Ethan Fox (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.) tied for the team-high with six ground balls each.

Marist (2-0) started the scoring first, jumping out to a 2-0 lead just 3:16 into the game on goals by Osborn and Nesmith.

After Begley traded goals with the Pioneers (0-2), Doherty and Begley both scored, with Rice assisting on the latter, to increase the Red Foxes' lead to 5-2 with 2:58 remaining in the first quarter.

Sacred Heart scored two goals, one at the end of the first period and another three minutes into the second quarter, to pull within one at 5-4. However, Marist shut them out the rest of the half, scoring four straight goals to pull ahead by five at 9-4. Begley started the run with his third score the game. Rice then found Herman in front of the net for a goal and, just 24 seconds later, Osborn passed to Radin who took a jumping, turnaround shot that found the back of the net. Radin completed the run with his second consecutive goal off of a Begley assist with 3:23 left in the half.

The Red Foxes continued to roll to start the third quarter, scoring the first three goals. Doherty scored two unassisted tallies, wrapped around Begley's fourth of the afternoon to bring the score to 12-4 with 8:19 on the clock.

Following a Sacred Heart goal, Rice found the back of the net off of a feed from long-stick midfielder Patrick Eaker (Redding, Conn.). It was Eaker's first career point.

The Pioneers would score five straight goals however to close within three at 13-10 at the end of the third quarter.

Goals by Begley and Osborn brought the Marist lead back up to five at 15-10 with 8:56 remaining and the Red Foxes held on for the victory.

Marist will look to improve to 3-0 when it plays its first game away from home next weekend travelling to Lafayette for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, March 2. Last season, the Red Foxes defeated Lafayette in overtime at Tenney Stadium, 11-10.
