Men's Lacrosse Overcomes Slow Start To Defeat Detroit 11-8

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - For the second time this season the attacking duo of Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) each registered five points, leading the Marist men's lacrosse team to an 11-8 victory over Detroit in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game at Tenney Stadium. It was the conference opener for both teams.

Doherty, wearing the #34 jersey to honor former teammate Eddie Coombs, scored three goals and added two assists. It was the fourth time in five games this season that Doherty has scored at least three goals. Rice had two goals and assisted on three others. Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) scored twice and Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.) each had a goal and an assist. Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) made seven saves in goal, including three in the fourth quarter. Matt Dugan (Cortland, N.Y.) went 15-21 on face-offs and scooped up a game-high nine ground balls. Long-stick midfielder Patrick Eaker (Redding, Conn.) caused five turnovers and collected six ground balls.

Marist (5-0, 1-0 MAAC) started out slow and sloppy, committing nine turnovers in the first quarter. Yet the defense forced 10 Detroit (0-6, 0-1 MAAC) turnovers and the Red Foxes only trailed 1-0 after the first period.

After the Titans scored again to start the second quarter Doherty put in his first of the game, assisted by Rice, to pull Marist within one with 12:16 left.

Doherty scored his second just 1:07 after Detroit had scored to take a 3-1 lead, against pulling the Red Foxes within a goal with 10:07 left in the second quarter.

Rice scored both of his goals in a 2:13 span to put Marist in the lead for the first time, 4-3, with 3:31 left. His first tally was assisted by Doherty and the second by Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.). Begley found Rice in front of the goal, who, with his back to the net, flipped the ball underhanded through the goalkeepers' legs.

Herman tallied his first goal of the game, and Marist's fifth of the quarter on an assist by Doherty putting the Red Foxes up by two, 5-3, with 2:03 left before halftime.

Detroit scored with 13 seconds left in the half to cut Marist's lead to 5-4 at the midway point.

The Red Foxes came out firing in the third quarter, scoring the first four goals of the period to open up a 9-4 lead. Marks scored the first just 1:13 into the quarter. Just 1:15 later, Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) scored his first goal of the season on a man-up situation on a nice feed from Rice. At the 11:19 mark, Rice again made a nice pass, this time finding Doherty right in front of the goal to complete the hat trick. Gannon Osborn (Canandaigua, N.Y.) completed the run with an unassisted score with 7:19 left in the third quarter.

The Titans scored the final three goals of the quarter to close the gap to just 9-7 going into the final quarter.

Radin scored at the 13:02 mark to bring the Red Foxes' lead back to three at 10-7, assisted by Marks. He then found Herman with 7:27 left to put Marist up 11-7.

Marist has a quick turnaround, hitting the road for a Monday night matchup 17th-ranked Duke. Last season, the Red Foxes went down to Durham and held a fourth quarter lead before falling to the then #8 Blue Devils.
