BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Marist men's lacrosse team overcame a halftime deficit, exploding for 11 goals in the second half, to defeat Canisius 13-5 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game on Saturday night.
Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) scored a career-high four goals and added two assists. Jack Doherty (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored three goals and Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y) and Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) each had two goals and an assist. Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) made 10 saves in goal. Ethan Fox (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) had a career-high four caused turnovers and collected a team-high five ground balls. Marist finished 3-4 on man-up opportunities
Canisus took an early 2-0 lead in the first 3:12 of the game, but Nesmith got the Red Foxes on the board at the 10:13 mark with a goal off of an assist from Radin.
Doherty scored an unassisted tally with 3:56 left in the first quarter to knott things up at two, but the Golden Griffins scored exactly a minute later to retake the lead.
Canisius scored the lone goal of the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead at halftime.
Marist came out of the locker rooms on all cylinders, scoring the first six goals of the second half while holding Canisius scoreless for a stretch of 20:37.
Radin scored the first two goals of the streak in the first three minutes of the third quarter. Rice gave the Red Foxes their first lead with a man-up goal at the 11:09 mark of the third period on an assist by Jim Marks (Camillus, N.Y.). Doherty scored with 3:20 on the clock to complete a four goal third quarter.
Rice and Aedan Herman (Stafford, Va.) both scored in the first 2:30 of the fourth quarter to expand Marist's lead to 8-4.
Following Canisius' lone goal of the second half, Marist closed the game with another streak of five consecutive goals. Radin scored his third of the game to start the run and Doherty and Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) each tallied man-up goals. Nesmith and Radin completed the run to provide the final margin of 13-5.
Marist (6-1, 2-0 MAAC) returns home on Saturday, March 30, for a noon game against MAAC foe VMI.
