POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist baseball team suffered an 11-9 loss to Binghamton in a non-conference game at McCann Field on Tuesday. The Red Foxes trailed 10-2 after three innings, but fought back and had the potential winning run at the plate in the ninth before coming up short.

The game included 19 walks, five wild pitches, four errors (all by Marist) and three hit batsmen. The third of Binghamton's five pitchers, Greg Ostner (1-1), earned the win by allowing just one run while striking out seven in 3.1 innings. Anthony Grillini recorded the final two outs for his second save.

For Marist, sophomore right-hander Evan Davis (Little Falls, N.Y.) took the loss and is now 1-2. Davis started and was charged with six runs, four of which were earned, in two-plus innings. Freshman right-hander Erik Bauer (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), junior right-hander Chris Thorsen (Lititz, Pa.) and sophomore right-hander Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.) allowed just one run over the final 6.2 innings. Thorsen tossed three scoreless frames, and Napolitano needed only seven pitches in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Binghamton outhit Marist, 10-9. Right fielder Zach Blanden and catcher Nick Pancerella each had two hits and two RBIs. For Marist, junior designated hitter Pat Welsh (Millersville, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Senior shortstop Zach Shank (Lititz, Pa.) went 2-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Binghamton had a three-run first without the benefit of a hit. Marist scored twice in the second, but the Bearcats broke the game open with a seven-run third on just three hits, as they were aided by two Marist errors. The Red Foxes then scored four times in the fourth, which included a two-run single by Shank, which cut their deficit to 10-6.

The teams traded single runs in the fifth, and Binghamton maintained an 11-7 lead until the bottom of the ninth. Graduate left fielder Eric Helmrich (Yonkers, N.Y.) started the inning with an infield single, which was followed by Welsh drawing a walk. Freshman Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.) then had a pinch-hit single to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by freshman center fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) made the score 11-8, and a two-out single by senior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) cut the gap to 11-9, but the Red Foxes drew no closer.

Marist is now 18-13-1; Binghamton improved to 17-12. The Red Foxes will return to action with a three-game home conference series against Iona this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday.
