Box Score 2 BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Marist baseball team was swept in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Canisius on Saturday at Demske Sports Complex. The Red Foxes fell 10-4 in game one, and suffered a 2-1 loss in a 10-inning second game that was originally scheduled for seven innings.
Senior first baseman Mike Orefice (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was the lone Red Fox to hit safely in both games, and went 3-for-7 on the day.
Here is a closer look at both games:
Game One – Canisius 10, Marist 4
A three-run homer by Canisius left fielder Jesse Kelso gave the Golden Griffins a three-run lead in the first, but Marist freshman center fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) brought the Red Foxes back within one with a two-run single in the second.
The score remained 3-2 in favor of Canisius until the top of the sixth, when junior catcher Zachary Passerelle (Sparta, N.J.) reached on a leadoff single, and scored on a ground-rule double by sophomore left fielder Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.). However, Canisius answered emphatically with a five-run sixth, punctuated by a two-run ground-rule double by center fielder Ryan Coppinger.
Senior right-hander Chris Bielak (Sayreville, N.J.), who started and went 5.2 innings, took the loss and fell to 5-2. Garrett Cortright went eight innings to earn the victory for Canisius, and is 8-2.
Game Two – Canisius 2, Marist 1 (10 innings)
Canisius again struck early with a first inning run, but Marist tied the game in the third. Junior right fielder Jake Berry (South Hamilton, Mass.) led off with a single, advanced to second and then third on a pair of wild pitches, and scored on a one-out single by freshman second baseman Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.).
The score remained tied at one apiece until the bottom of the 10th. The Golden Griffins placed runners on first and third with a pair of singles, and an intentional walk loaded the bases. First baseman Jimmy Luppens then singled in the winning run on a 3-2 pitch.
Marist senior right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) took the tough-luck loss. Houseal went nine-plus innings and scattered nine hits and two walks while striking out three. His record fell to 6-5. Canisius closer Jon Fitzsimmons earned the win with 2.1 shutout innings, and is now 3-0.
