Pioneer Football League athletic director and coaches established the honor roll as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in football at member institutions during the fall semester and posted a 3.0 grade-point average or higher during the semester while enrolled fulltime in accordance with NCAA rules.
In 2013, the Marist football team won a share of the PFL championship for the first time in the Red Foxes' five years in the league. With an 8-3 overall record, Marist achieved its highest win total in its 36 years as a varsity program.
