LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - In another battle between the top two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schools, the Marist volleyball team (19-3, 11-1) took down Siena 3-1 on Oct. 25. The Red Foxes charged back from a 25-13 first set loss to take the final three sets of the match 25-14, 25-23 and 25-14. The Saints are now 10-13 overall and 8-3 in MAAC play.
Siena led for the entire first set, pulling away with a five-point run to make it 24-11. Marist took control in the second set, ripping off a season-high 10 consecutive points. Sophomore Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had all three of her service aces on the run, which included a pair of kills from sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) and ballooned the Red Foxes' lead to 11-1. The Saints cut the deficit to 12-6, but that would be as close as they would get in the frame.
The third set saw five ties, but only two lead changes as Marist got the upper hand in the contest. Both teams had traded three point runs by the midway point and Siena owned a slight 12-11 advantage. Siena held a 20-16 advantage at one time, but let it slip away with five attack errors, including three in a row. Marist won the set on a kill from junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio).
Marist started and finished strong in the final set, scoring the first four points and the final six points to finish off the Saints for the second time this season.
The matched was decided on forced errors, as Marist outhit Siena .113 to .088. The Red Foxes remained among the nation's best in aces per set, averaging exactly 2.0 this season.
Senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) slammed a team-high 12 kills and tied with junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) for the team lead with eight blocks. Senior Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) chipped in 14 digs in the defensive effort.
Siena sophomore libero Bobbi Lin Kalama and Haley Howell registered match highs in digs and assists, collecting 19 and 33 respectively.
Marist returns to McCann Arena for two more matches in the 2014 regular season. The Red Foxes will host Iona at 5 p.m. Nov. 1 and close out their home slate with a match against Manhattan at 1 p.m. Nov. 2 for Senior Day.
