Box Score HAMDEN, Conn. – The Marist volleyball team (14-2, 6-0) added to its program record winning streak by taking down the Quinnipiac Bobcats in straight sets Oct. 4. The Red Foxes won their 10th consecutive match with set victories of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-21 to remain undefeated in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. The team has now won 12 straight sets.
Marist had 16 of their 43 kills in the opening set, going on a 4-0 run to make the score 9-6. The Red Foxes extended their lead to 19-11 by going on a six-point tear with senior Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.) serving. Quinnipiac tied the second set at six, but Marist scored five of the next six points for an 11-7 advantage.
The third set featured 16 ties and nine lead changes, with both teams trading points for most of the way. A kill by Quinnipiac sophomore Allison Leigh tied the score at 16 apiece and was the first of four straight points for the Bobcats. The Red Foxes responded with four straight points of their own and a service ace from senior Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) kept Marist's program record winning streak alive.
Senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) finished with three blocks and junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) slammed nine kills. The two joined senior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) (.417) as the only three players to hit over .400 in the match. Junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) added a team-best 12 kills.
Marist led the nation in aces per set heading into the weekend and had nine service aces against the Bobcats to bring its average up to 2.10. Quinnipiac (2-14, 0-4) hit .152 for the match and collected 15 attack errors.
Senior Tanner Celestin tallied seven kills and sophomore Cody Michaels racked up 11 digs. All 14 of the Bobcats' blocks came assisted, including a match-high five from freshman Elizabeth Kloos.
The Red Foxes will look to maintain their flawless mark in MAAC play when they take on Fairfield for the second time this season Oct. 5. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
