POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - A four set victory over Iona on Nov. 1 kept the Marist volleyball team's winning streak in McCann Arena alive. The Red Foxes lost the first set 25-19, but took the next three 25-18, 25-14 and 26-24 to improve to 20-3 overall and 12-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
After the Gaels dominated the first set, the score was tied nine times in the second set. When it was knotted at 13, Marist scored five of the next six points to pull ahead 18-14. It would remain on top with the help of service aces from sophomores Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas).
Senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) had four kills in the decisive third set in which the Red Foxes never trailed. They put together a 10-2 run that vaulted them ahead 20-8 at one time.
Iona hung around in the final set, tying the score four times. A kill from freshman Kelsey Ediger (Pearland, Texas) put Marist up 23-20, but Iona tied the match one final time at 24 with a kill from senior Taylor Cembalisty.
Marist owned a 19-9 edge in blocks as a team and hit .315 to the Gaels' .205 in the match.
Stephens led the Red Foxes with 13 kills and six digs, while Schlegel posted a career-high 48 assists. Senior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) added 19 digs.
Marist has now won 15 consecutive home matches dating back to last season. The Red Foxes will host MAAC rival Manhattan on Nov. 2 for Senior Day. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. in McCann Arena.
