JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Marist volleyball team (22-5, 14-3) locked up the top seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships and clinched a share of the 2014 regular season title with a 3-0 sweep of Saint Peter's on Nov. 15.
The Red Foxes had set victories of 25-21, 25-11 and 28-26 in their 14th sweep of the season and their 22nd win set a single season program record.
In a first set that featured 17 ties and six lead changes, Marist found itself down 21-20. A 5-0 run with senior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) serving ended with a kill from junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) and catapulted the Red Foxes to a win to begin the match.
Marist began to pull away in the second set with a 4-0 run after the score was tied at two. A tear of five straight points, three of which resulted from kills by junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.), gave the Red Foxes a 19-7 cushion on their way to a 2-0 advantage in the match.
The third set was much more contentious, as the score was tied 16 times. The Peacocks emerged out of a 22-19 hole to bring Marist to the brink of a fourth set. Down 24-22, the Red Foxes scored six of the match's final eight points to earn their eighth sweep in MAAC competition.
Shaw slammed a team-high 12 kills and hit .647. Senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) had the Red Foxes' next highest hitting percentage at .556 to go along with six kills and Zywick had 15 digs. Marist hit .333 as a team and finished with a 66.7 sideout percentage.
Junior Lauren Behrens had 12 kills for the Peacocks, who hit just .107 in the contest. Freshman Kayla Howell led the Saint Peter's defensive effort with 15 digs.
A Marist victory over Rider on Nov. 16 in the 2014 regular season finale would give the Red Foxes the MAAC regular season title outright. First serve from Lawrenceville, N.J. is scheduled for 1 p.m.
