LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The no. 1 ranked Marist volleyball team (24-5, 15-3) escaped the quarterfinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships, defeating no. 8 Iona in five sets.

Marist dropped the first set 26-24 and battled back to win the second two sets 25-21 and 25-22. The Gaels forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-23 victory, but the Red Foxes held on 15-7 to close out the first day of the tournament at ESPN Wide World of Sports HP Field House.

With its second straight postseason victory against Iona, Marist is set to face Fairfield at 5 p.m. Nov. 21 in a MAAC semifinal match that will be shown on ESPN3. 

An 8-0 Gaels run capped the first set before Marist evened the match in the second set. The Red Foxes took their largest lead of the set following a 7-2 run that forced an Iona timeout. They forced three Iona attack errors to end the second frame and carried momentum into the third set, as junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) slammed three kills on a 9-3 run.   

Iona erased an 18-14 deficit in the fourth set and tied the score four more times before forcing a fifth set on a final kill by freshman Kassandra Darnaby. Marist never trailed in the final set however, jumping out to a 6-1 lead and closing out the contest scoring eight of the final 12 points.   

Lahey was one of three Marist players with double-digit kills, racking up a team-best 19. Sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) compiled a career-high 61 assists as part of her second straight double double. Four Red Foxes tallied double-digit digs, as senior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) sprawled for 25 and also served on two Marist scoring sprees. Senior Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.) had 12 digs alongside a pair of service aces.

Gaels' senior captain Catrina Warren posted a double-double in the losing effort, finishing with match highs of 19 kills and 30 digs. Senior captain Caris Miles chipped in 45 assists.

The Red Foxes will play Fairfield in a rematch of last year's MAAC championship final. First serve of the semifinal match is scheduled for 5 p.m. Nov. 21. The match will be shown on ESPN3.
