LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The top seeded Marist volleyball team (25-5, 15-3) took down Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe and fourth seeded Fairfield in the semifinals of the MAAC Championships on Nov. 21. The Red Foxes' victory in the rematch of last year's conference final moves them into the 2014 tournament's final match. Marist will face off against the winner of the second semifinal match between no. 3 Manhattan and no. 2 Siena.
After Marist posted set victories of 25-22 and 25-23 respectively, Fairfield stayed alive with a 25-17 win in the third frame. Marist then took the fourth set 25-20 to punch its ticket to the conference finals. The Red Foxes will compete for the 2014 MAAC Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament in a match that airs on ESPN3 at 2 p.m. Nov. 22 from ESPN Wide World of Sports HP Field House.
Down 7-2 in the opening set, Marist cut the deficit to two after forcing a pair of Fairfield service errors, then took its first lead, 19-18, on a service ace from senior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.). Fairfield would trail by one point three more times, but a kill from senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) gave the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead in the match.
Marist kept momentum in its favor, opening up a 5-1 lead in the second set. Fairfield creeped back however, as neither team led by more than two for the next 31 rallies. Marist held the lead following a kill in front from junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) and snatched a 2-0 edge in the match.
A 10-0 explosion from the defending MAAC champion Stags served as a pivotal point in the third set. Marist had a 5-1 run of its own in between timeouts by both sides, but Fairfield ultimately stayed in the contest to force a fourth set.
The see-saw final set featured six ties and three lead changes. A kill from freshman Kelsey Ediger (Pearland, Texas) tied the set at 15 points apiece. From that point on, the Red Foxes reeled off a 7-3 run and never lost the lead, sealing their spot in the final.
Shaw slammed 10 kills and was one of three Red Foxes to finish in double figures. Five Marist players registered double-digit digs, including Zywick with 24 and senior Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) right behind with 23. Marist sealed the victory in front of the net, jumping for five of its 22 blocks for the match in the fourth set.
Fairfield freshman Megan Theiller posted a double-double with 12 kills and 21 digs, while junior Caitlin Stapleton registered 16 kills and a .333 hitting percentage for the Stags.
The Red Foxes will play either third seed Manhattan or second seed Siena at 2 p.m. Nov. 22 for the 2014 MAAC Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. The match will be streamed live on ESPN3.
