BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Marist volleyball team (20-5, 12-3) began a four-match road trip by falling to Niagara in three sets Nov. 8. Niagara won with set victories of 26-24, 25-20 and 25-16 to improve to 8-7 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play and 12-14 overall.
Despite trailing by as much as eight points in the opening set, Marist evened the score at 24 on a kill by senior Marisa Gilbert (Pfulgerville, Texas). The Purple Eagles then pulled away on freshman Alexis Gray's kill and assisted block.
A pair of service aces from sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) gave the Red Foxes a 10-5 lead, their largest of the match, in the second set. A 9-0 Niagara run gave the Purple Eagles an advantage they would not relinquish however. Neither side led by more than two points in the final set until a service ace from Niagara freshman Rayenne Hale increased the Marist deficit to 17-14. Two more five-point bursts near the end of the set gave Niagara the victory.
Schlegel finished with 22 assists and eight digs alongside four service aces for the Red Foxes. Senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) and junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) tied for the team high in kills with eight apiece. Gilbert paced the defense with three blocks.
