EDISON, N.J. – Senior third baseman Nick McQuail (Wantagh, N.Y.) and sophomore outfielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) of the Marist baseball team were named Preseason All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the coaches' preseason poll. As a team, the Red Foxes were tabbed for fifth out of 11 teams.
Both McQuail and Pagano were named Second Team All-MAAC last year.
McQuail, one of three captains on this year's team, started all 52 of Marist's games last year, and hit .319 with a .434 on-base percentage. He scored 34 runs, and drove in 32. In his career, McQuail has started all 151 games he's appeared in.
Pagano hit .337 with 40 runs scored and 26 runs batted in as a freshman. He led the MAAC with five triples, had on-base percentage of .428 and a slugging percentage of .453. Pagano was named MAAC Rookie of the Week twice last season.
Last year's MAAC tournament champion, Canisius, was chosen as the conference's preseason favorite. Golden Griffins' first baseman Jimmy Luppens was tabbed as Preseason Player of the Year.
The Marist baseball team has finished at least .500 in each of the past five seasons, and have had six players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in the past three seasons. The Red Foxes open the 2014 season on Friday at the Cardinal Classic, hosted by Lamar. Marist will play both Illinois-Chicago and Lamar on Friday and Saturday.
