LATHAM, N.Y. – The Marist women's tennis team picked up its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Siena. The Red Foxes improve to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
“I am so proud of the group we had out there today,” said head coach Jason Sacher. “As a team, we have faced a lot of adversity. Prior to today's match, I felt that the results were not indicative of the tremendous growth and development many of our players have made over the course of the spring. The players out there today have worked so hard all season, going through physically demanding practices and fitness sessions week in and week out. From the beginning, all we have focused on is the process, striving to get better each and every day. As a coach, it was rewarding to see us rise to the occasion and seize the moment. We have a lot of work and improvement ahead, but we will enjoy this victory and look to keep growing as a team and getting better each day.”
Sophomore Karly Pang (Kaneohe, Hawaii) got things rolling for Marist, knocking off Carly Holloway, 6-2, 6-0. Junior Sabrina Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) defeated Allysa Singh in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Mitsuki Fukamachi picked up Siena's lone singles win of the night with a 6-3, 6-1 win over senior Marielle Campbell (Patterson, N.Y.). Sophomore Melissa Carlay (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) got the Red Foxes back on track with a win in a hard fought three-set tiebreaker match against Jessica Macaluso, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). Sophomore Nikki Rohan (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) downed Cassandra Braz 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Katie Seitz (Pennington, N.Y.) closed singles play on a good note, taking down Erika Reagan in two tiebreakers, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-1).
Marist also won the doubles point with two wins. The duo of Pang and Tahir defeated Holloway and Singh, 8-3. Sophomore Kaye Eastman (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Carlay downed Macaluso and Braz in a tie breaker, 9-8 (8-6). Reagan and Fukamachi posted Siena's lone doubles win, taking down Campbell and Seitz, 8-6.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, April 6 against Colgate. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion. Senior Marielle Campbell will be honored in a senior day ceremony prior to the match.
