CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Marist volleyball team capped off their season opening trip with two more wins at the Boston College Invitational on Saturday. The Red Foxes improved to 3-0 on the season after facing Hartford in the early match and Boston College in the backend of the doubleheader.
The Red Foxes defeated Hartford 3-0 with set scores of 25-8, 25-15, and 25-14.
Junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) and senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) each totaled 8 kills while freshman Kelsey Ediger (Pearland, Texas) totaled 6 kills of her own. The Red Foxes as a team totaled 31 kills in the match at a .347 percentage. On the defensive side of the ball Marist achieved 12 team blocks.
For the second straight match sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) totaled 20 plus assists. Schlegel recorded 27 assists this time around to go along with two aces, three digs, and three blocks. Senior libero Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) added seven digs and sophmore Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) recorded 6 digs.
The Red Foxes closed out the first set on a 10-3 run, the second set on a 10-6 run, and the final set on a 10-4 run to conclude an impressive effort in the first match.
The second match of the doubleheader against Boston College proved to be a thrilling one as Marist recovered from a 2-0 set deficit to win in five sets.
Boston College took the first two sets 25-19 and 27-25 but the Red Foxes rallied and took the remaining sets 25-15, 25-16, and 15-10.
The Red Foxes recorded 58 kills in the match on a .265 kill percentage to Boston College's 52 kills on .167 percent. Marist also totaled 72 defensive digs and 8 team blocks.
In a repeat performance of her earlier match Amanda Schlegel totaled 42 assists to accompany 17 digs, seven kills, and a .583 kill percentage. Junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) recorded 16 kills with a .419 kill percentage and Kelsey Lahey contributed with 14 kills on a .353 percentage.
Kelsey Ediger and Mackenzie Stephens both had nine and eight kills respectively.
At one point Marist trailed in the final set 4-2 but was able to eventually tie the score at eight a piece. From that point on their lead wouldn't be relinquished, going on a 7-2 run to finish the fifth and final set 15-10.
Shaw earned Tournament MVP honors, while Schlegel and Stephens were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Red Foxes will continue on the road to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take part in the Air Force Tournament on Sept. 5-6.
