Box Score EASTON, Pa. - A hard fought third set gave the Marist volleyball team a 3-0 victory over Lafayette on Sept. 12 in the Crosstown Tournament. The Red Foxes' improved to 6-2 on the season by cruising through the first two sets 25-15 and 25-7 before taking the final set, which featured 14 ties, 32-30.
The Red Foxes charged back from a 24-21 deficit in the third set, but 12 volleys followed between them and the Leopards. A kill by junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) and an attack error by Lafayette sophomore Katherine Stephens finally ended the match and gave Marist its third victory in its last four matches.
Senior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) led the Red Foxes with 15 digs, while sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) had 28 assists to go along with 10 digs. In the front of the net, junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) swatted a match-high 12 kills and senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) compiled a team-high .556 hitting percentage.
Lafayette fell to 3-6 on the season, as they failed to register a block in the match and had 23 kills to Marist's 42. Junior Brianne Giangiobbe had 17 assists, while senior Lauren Pisauro came off the Leopards' bench to contribute a team-high 15 digs.
Marist trailed just once in the first set and Schlegel assisted on a Lahey kill before serving during the final three points. The Red Foxes tightened their grip on the match in the second set, taking a 5-1 lead and tallying 11 of the second set's 12 points, including six straigh to balloon their lead to 21-6.
Marist will be back in action Sept. 13 with consecutive matches against Delaware State at 12:30 p.m. and Lehigh at 3 p.m. to finish competition in the Crosstown Tournament. Both matches will take place in Lehigh's Leeman-Turner Arena.
