Box Score 2 BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Marist volleyball team shut down Delaware State 3-0 before taking down Lehigh in five sets to finish the Crosstown Tournament unbeaten and improve to 8-2 heading into Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
The Red Foxes (8-2) made quick work of Delaware State (0-7), winning the sets 25-12, 25-20, and 25-9 in a match that lasted just 1:01. Marist jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Lehigh, taking the first two sets 25-23 and 25-22. The Mountain Hawks (5-7) forced a decisive fifth set with wins of 26-24 and 25-15, but Marist erased a 10-6 deficit in the final set to prevail 15-13.
Junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) was named tournament MVP and senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Marist 3, Delaware State 0 - 25-12, 25-20, 25-9
Sophomore Devon Dawson (Firsco, Texas) led the Red Foxes with a .533 hitting percentage and Stephens hit .385 with seven kills. Freshman Sydney Rojek (Lake View, N.Y.) broke out with 11 assists and three service aces, while junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) slammed 12 kills.
Delaware State lost all three of its matches at the tournament after falling to Marist. Freshman Nevershi Ellis led the team with 10 kills and junior Jasmine Jackson had 13 digs, but the Hornets hit just .020 as a team.
Marist took seven straight points with Shaw serving to increase its lead to 11-2 on the way to winning the first set, but Delaware State did not go away quietly in the second. Down 21-11, the Hornets scored nine of the next 10 points to cut the Red Foxes' lead to 22-20. Marist got a block from Shaw and sophomore Liz Gassman (Glenside, Pa.) and forced two errors to end the second set. 11 straight points by the Red Foxes in the third set all but ended the match and gave the team its sixth shutout of the season.
Marist 3, Lehigh 2 - 25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 12-25, 15-13
Shaw hit .417 and reached double figures in both kills (12) and digs (10) in the Red Foxes' win over Lehigh. Lahey had 20 kills of her own alongside a .356 hitting percentage. In the see-saw affair, the Red Foxes totaled 56 kills and 57 digs.
Lehigh junior Amy Matula finished with a match-high 55 assists, while senior Jade Van Streepen compiled 14 kills and a .385 hitting percentage. Senior Kaylynn Genemaras led the Mountain Hawks on the attack with 17 kills and hit .452 in the contest.
The Red Foxes trailed by as much as five in the first set before tying the score at 23. Marist took the lead on an attack error by Lehigh junior Leah Turner and a Schlegel kill. Neither side led by more than three in the second set.
The Mountain Hawks snapped the Red Foxes' win streak at 11 straight sets by taking the third set. Marist built an early 5-1 lead, but trailed 18-17 and tied the score five more times before Lehigh prevailed. Down 9-5 in the final set, Marist persevered by scoring four of next five points coming out of its timeout and picked up its fourth straight victory.
Marist will open up its MAAC season with a three-game home stand. The Red Foxes' will host Canisius at 1 p.m. Sept. 20 in McCann Arena then be right back in action at 1 p.m. Sept. 21 to play Niagara. Marist will also host Fairfield at 7 p.m. Sept. 24.
