Marist Volleyball Wins Sixth Straight, Sweeps Niagara

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist volleyball team won its sixth straight match on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of Niagara (25-19, 25-16, 25-19) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at McCann Arena.

Junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) had a match-high 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .500. Senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) had a match-high seven blocks to go along with seven kills and a hitting percentage of .462. Sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) totaled 38 assists to go along with seven digs, two blocks and two kills. Senior Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.) led the Red Foxes with 14 digs.

For the match, Marist hit .312, as opposed to .035 for Niagara. The Red Foxes had 12 total blocks, as opposed to three for the Purple Eagles.

The first set included eight ties and two lead changes. With the score tied 14-14, a Niagara service error gave Marist the lead for good, as the Red Foxes outscored the Purple Eagles 11-5 over the remainder of the set. A kill by Stephens closed out the set to give Marist a 1-0 lead in the match.

Marist roared out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but Niagara battled back by scoring the next four points. The set included six ties and two lead changes, but a kill by Lahey gave Marist the lead for good at 13-12. That point started the Red Foxes on a 13-4 run to close out the set, which ended with back-to-back kills by Lahey.

In the third set, after the teams traded points early, the Red Foxes gradually pulled away. Lahey totaled five kills in the set, and Marist had eight total team blocks. Stephens and sophomore Liz Gassman (Glenside, Pa.) registered four block assists apiece.

Marist is now 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC; Niagara fell to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC.

Marist returns to action on Wednesday, when the Red Foxes host Fairfield at 7 p.m. The contest pits the teams that were picked first and second in this year's MAAC preseason poll, as well as the teams who competed in last year's conference championship match.
