Box Score RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Marist volleyball team (12-2, 4-0 MAAC) picked up its ninth shutout of the season in a battle of schools with undefeated Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference records. The Red Foxes took down Manhattan (8-5, 2-1 MAAC) 25-18, 25-21 and 25-18 on Sept. 27 to extend their winning streak to eight games.
Marist led for nearly the entire match, trailing only 2-1 in the third set. With senior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) serving, the Red Foxes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set. The Jaspers tied the set at 16, but Marist erupted for five straight points.
Late in the second set, Manhattan cut the deficit to 22-19, but Marist came out of a timeout and finished with a kill by junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) and a block by Lahey and Gilbert.
The Red Foxes hit .400 as a team in the second set and .304 in the match, while owning a 42-36 advantage in kills.
Gilbert finished with 10 kills and hit .714. Senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) slammed nine kills and swatted three blocks to go along with a .353 hitting percentage. Seniors Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) and Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) finished with double-digit digs, totaling 11 and 13 respectively.
Juniors Claire Van Dyk and Sydney Volovski tallied nine kills apiece for Manhattan, but the Jaspers hit .164 for the match. Senior Malia McGuinness had a match-high 15 digs.
The Red Foxes continue MAAC play against Iona on Sept. 28. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. in New Rochelle, N.Y.
