Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Marist volleyball team won its ninth straight match and picked up its 10th shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over Iona on Sept. 28. The Red Foxes remained unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play and handed the Gaels their fifth loss in their last five matches. After winning the three sets 25-19, 25-15, and 25-22, Marist improved to 5-0 in MAAC play and 13-2 overall.
The first set featured eight ties with the final one coming at 13-13. Marist scored six of the next seven points to reclaim the lead with the help of service aces from junior Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.), senior Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.) and sophomore Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas).
The Red Foxes enjoyed leads of three or more points for most of the second set, exploding on a five-point run highlighted by three straight kills by junior Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio). Lahey's kills increased the Marist lead to 7-4. Marist also had four-point run to make it 24-14 with senior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) serving.
Iona (4-11, 1-3 MAAC) had its own runs in the final set to take its largest leads of the match at 13-11 and 18-16. A Gilbert kill tied the score at 21 and Marist took control from that point on.
Senior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) had four of her eight kills for the Red Foxes in the first set, while Lahey finished with 10 of Marist's 38 kills for the match. Shaw picked up 13 digs.
Senior Catrina Warren led Iona with 8 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore Karly White had five blocks.
The Red Foxes will hit the road for two more MAAC matches next weekend, facing Quinnipiac on Oct. 4 and going up against defending MAAC Champion Fairfield on Oct. 5. First serve for both contests is slated for 1 p.m.
