BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Marist men's basketball team suffered a 60-54 defeat to Fairfield on Friday in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Webster Bank Arena.

Senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led all scorers with 22 points. Lewis added four rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot. Making his return after missing 15 games with a hand injury, senior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 11 points, four rebounds and an assist in 30 minutes.

Marcus Gilbert paced Fairfield with 15 points, while Tyler Nelson added 14.

Marist got off to a slow start, as the Red Foxes scored just three points in the first 8:16 and fell behind 15-3. The Stags' largest lead was 15, which came when they led 23-8 with 9:29 left in the first half. The Red Foxes responded by holding the Stags without a field goal for the remainder of the half, and Marist outscored Fairfield 15-3 the remainder of the half. The Stags took a 26-23 advantage into the intermission.

Fairfield led wire-to-wire in the first half, but the second half included six lead changes and five ties. A 7-0 Marist run, which culminated in a dunk by Lewis, gave the Red Foxes their first lead at 30-28 with 17:29 to play. Over the next 10:02, the lead changes hands five more times, with neither team leading by more than four in that stretch. With 7:27 to play, a pair of free throws by Fairfield's Coleman Johnson gave the Stags a 44-43 lead, and Fairfield led for the remainder of the contest. The Red Foxes never trailed by less than five in the final two minutes.

Marist shot 19-for-57 (.333) from the field, 4-for-23 (.174) from three-point range and 12-for-15 (.800) from the free-throw line. Fairfield shot 15-for-39 (.385) from the field, 3-for-13 (.231) from three-point range and 27-for-36 (.750) from the free-throw line. The Stags drained their first 14 free throws of the second half, and went 23-for-27 (.852) from the line in the final 20 minutes.

Marist is now 1-16 overall and 0-7 in the MAAC. Fairfield is 6-11 overall and 4-3 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, when they host Quinnipiac at McCann Arena. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m., and will follow the Marist women's team's game against Siena, which is set for noon. There will be separate tickets for each game, and tickets are available on GoRedFoxes.com.

Notes: Lewis now has 35 career games with at least 20 points, including eight this season. His career point total stands at 1,794. … Lewis has led the Red Foxes in both points and steals in all seven games since returning from a sprained ankle. … Senior guard/forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer in his 17th straight game. … Marist tied a season low with seven turnovers. Its previous game with seven was its season opener at Bucknell on Nov. 14. Tonight marked the first time Marist's opening night lineup of red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.), Curry, Lewis, junior forward Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) and junior center Eric Truog (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) started together since that night. … Hart hit a running, banked 40-footer that was ruled to have come after the buzzer for halftime, and then confirmed by replay. … Sophomore center Kentrall Brooks (Bronx, N.Y.) had a career-high seven rebounds in 18 minutes, which tied a career high.
