NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – The Marist men's basketball team won its second straight game on Friday, defeating Niagara 65-61 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at the Gallagher Center.
Senior guard/forward Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) scored a game-high 22 points. Red-shirt sophomore guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) scored 16 points, including the team's last 11 over the final 3:25. Hart went 9-for-9 from the free-throw line.
Junior forward Phillip Lawrence (Baltimore, Md.) had nine points to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Junior center Eric Truog (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) had eight points, tied for the team high with seven rebounds, had a team-best four assists, a blocked shot and a steal. Senior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied Truog for the team high with seven rebounds, and added six points, two steals and an assist.
Niagara had four double-digit scorers, led by Emile Blackman with 18. Blackman shot 8-for-13 from the field. Ramone Snowden contributed 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
There were nine ties and four lead changes in the contest, but Marist led for 31:52 and only trailed for 1:39. The Red Foxes led by as much as five in the first half, and took a 24-21 halftime lead.
A jumper by Lewis and a bucket by Truog gave Marist a seven-point lead at 28-21 with 18:43 remaining, and forced a Niagara timeout. After Snowden and Lewis exchanged three-pointers on the ensuing possessions, a 7-0 Niagara run tied the score at 31 with 16:19 to play.
Marist grew its lead back to seven at 47-40 on a jumper by Lewis with 9:12 to go. However, a basket by Blackman with 3:44 left gave Niagara its first lead at 56-54.
With 3:25 left, Hart hit a pair of free throws to tie the score at 56. A basket by Snowden put Niagara up 59-58 with 1:37 left. On Marist's next possession, Lewis was fouled, but missed the front end of a one-and-one with 1:14 remaining. The Red Foxes responded by forcing a shot clock violation on Niagara's next possession, and Hart drained a three from the left wing with 28 seconds left to put Marist up for good at 61-59. The Red Foxes forced a turnover on an errant pass on the next possession, and Hart went 4-for-4 from the line in the final 10 seconds to preserve the win.
Marist is now 3-18 overall and 2-9 in MAAC play. Niagara fell to 3-17 overall and 2-9 in the MAAC.
Marist concludes its trip to western New York on Sunday, when the Red Foxes face Canisius for the second time this season. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
