UNCASVILLE, Connecticut – Behind a career-high 37 points from red-shirt junior guard Khallid Hart, the Marist men's basketball team defeated Brown 84-83 in double overtime in the Hall of Fame Shootout at Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday night.
Hart was named the game's Most Valuable Player. He shot 11-for-23 from the field, 4-for-11 from three-point range and 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. Hart had career highs of 49 minutes played and five steals. He added three rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Freshman guard Brian Parker finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman forward Kristinn Palsson had 11 points, including three three-pointers, and five rebounds. Junior center Kentrall Brooks had a career-high 10 points to go along with a career-high three steals, three rebounds and two blocked shots.
All five Brown starters scored in double digits. The Bears were led by Cedric Kuakumensah, who had a team-high 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The game included 12 ties and 12 lead changes, and neither team led by double digits at any point. The Bears scored the final five points of the first half to take a 32-25 halftime lead. The Red Foxes shot just .294 (10-for-34) in the first 20 minutes.
With 18:04 remaining, a basket gave Steven Spieth gave Brown its largest lead at 37-28. The Red Foxes battled back, and a three-pointer by Palsson at the 11:46 mark gave Marist a 43-41 lead. But with 9:38 left, a three-point by Tavon Blackmon gave the Bears back the advantage at 46-43.
Brown held onto the lead until a driving layup by Hart tied the score at 62 with 12 seconds remaining. Then, with five seconds remaining, Brooks deflected a pass and retrieved the ball. He fed it ahead to freshman forward Isaiah Lamb, who found Hart. Hart drove the lane, and hit another driving layup with one second remaining. A blocking foul was initially called, but after an officials' conference, the call was changed to a charge, which nullified the basket. The game then went to overtime.
A three-pointer by Palsson and a jumper by Hart gave Marist its largest lead at 74-68 with 1:24 remaining in the first overtime period. However, Brown tied the game with three-pointers on consecutive possessions by Blackmon and JR Hobbie. Neither team scored on its final possession, and the game went to a second overtime.
Brown led by four on three different occasions in the second overtime, with the last time coming on a layup by Jason Massey with 53 seconds left. However, a long three-pointer by Hart seven seconds later cut Brown's lead to 83-82. Hart recorded a steal on Brown's next possession. He was then fouled with 11 seconds to play, and drained two free throws. Brown's final possession resulted in a steal by Parker, and the Red Foxes recorded an 84-83 victory.
Marist is now 4-6 with its first two-game winning streak of the season. Brown is 3-7.
Tuesday's game marked the first double-overtime game for the Red Foxes since a 96-92 victory at Monmouth on Feb. 16, 2014.
Marist will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 29, when the Red Foxes play their final non-conference game of the season at Jacksonville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
