Box Score 2 CRANBURY, N.J. – The Marist baseball team did not allow a run in 18 innings against Sacred Heart on Sunday. The Red Foxes won the first game of the doubleheader 5-0, and earned a 2-0 victory in the second game. Both games were played at Rowland Park.
It marked the first time Marist recorded shutouts in both ends of a doubleheader since 2007.
Game One – Marist 5, Sacred Heart 0
Senior right-hander Evan Davis (Little Falls, N.Y.) pitched a complete game shutout. Davis struck out nine, scattered seven hits and walked just one. He threw 84 of his 117 pitches for strikes, and induced 15 ground ball outs. Davis improved his record to 2-2.
The Red Foxes outhit the Pioneers, 12-7. Sophomore designated hitter Tyler Kirkpatrick (Eagleville, Pa.) and junior shortstop John Brucker (Sparta, N.J.) had three hits and a double apiece. Junior second baseman Joey Aiola (Suffern, N.Y.) went 2-for-4. Senior first baseman Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) drove in two runs and scored one.
Marist opened the scoring in the first. Kirkpatrick led off the game with a single, and he was forced home by three consecutive walks, the last being by Laurino. In the second, Brucker led off with a single, and came home on a sacrifice fly by red-shirt sophomore Zachary Racusin (Mendham, N.J.).
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Red Foxes until the eighth, when an RBI single by Brucker brought in junior left fielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.). Marist then added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. Laurino hit a sacrifice fly, and reached second on an error, as Racusin scored on the play. The Red Foxes closed out the scoring on an RBI single by senior catcher Mark Brennan (Wallingford, Conn.), which brought home Laurino.
Sacred Heart starter Jason Foley (0-3), who went the first five innings, took the loss. Center fielder Jayson Sullivan went 2-for-4.
Game Two – Marist 2, Sacred Heart 0
Making his first start of the season, senior right-hander Chris Napolitano (Wall, N.J.) retired the first 17 Pioneers he faced. In seven innings, Napolitano struck out six, did not walk a batter and struck out six. He threw 63 of his 92 pitches for strikes.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Pagano lined a single to left field, which brought home Racusin and junior center fielder Graham McIntire (Concord, N.H.) with the only two runs of the game.
Sophomore right-hander Sean Keenan (Dayton, N.J.) followed with a scoreless eighth, and sophomore right-hander Ryan Thomas (Ringoes, N.J.) pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season. Both Keenan and Thomas needed just 11 pitches to get through their innings. Thomas recorded a strikeout.
Robbie Maguire (0-2), who went the first 5.1 innings, took the loss for Sacred Heart. Jesus Medina followed with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief.
Marist did not commit an error in either game.
Marist improved to 3-10; Sacred Heart is now 1-13.
Marist returns to action on Tuesday with a non-conference game on Tuesday at Hartford. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
