POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK – The Marist women's tennis team dropped a close Saturday afternoon match against non-conference opponent NJIT, 4-3, at the East Campus Tennis Pavilion.
With the loss the Red Foxes move to 3-10 overall but remain 3-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.
Starting the day strong the Red Foxes were able to take down NJIT in all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point but were unable to close out the match after the early advantage. The usual no. 1 starting pair of junior Karly Pang (Kaneohe, Hawaii) and freshman Claire Schmitz (Scotia, N.Y.) handled the NJIT team of Carolina Zanotta and Nathalie Habegger, 8-2.
At the no. 2 pairing sophomore Callie Morlock (Golden, Colo.) teamed up with experienced senior Sabrina Tahir (Yonkers, N.Y.) to secure the doubles point with another 8-2 victory.
Junior's Nikkie Rohan (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Katie Seitz (Pennington, N.J.) also earned a doubles win for the Red Foxes as they too won 8-2 over NJIT's third pairing.
The Red Foxes couldn't carry the momentum over to singles play, dropping matches in the no. 1,2,3, and fourth singles spots with two out of the four going to a third set. Sietz and freshman Elizabeth Brozovich (Port Huron, Mich.) were bright spots for the team as they won their singles matches in straight sets.
The Red Foxes have a quick turnaround as they return to action tomorrow afternoon against MAAC foe Saint Peter's as the team celebrates senior day. Senior day festivities begin at around 11:45 a.m.
