POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist volleyball team (8-5, 1-1 MAAC) shut out NJIT in its non-conference finale Sept. 23 in McCann Arena.
No set was decided by more than four points, as Marist posted set wins of 25-21, 25-23 and battled to the final point to take the third set 28-26. The Red Foxes finished their longest home stand of the season winning five of six matches.
Sophomore Kelsey Ediger (12 kills, 11 digs) and senior Kelsey Lahey (10 kills, 12 digs) each registered a double-double, while senior Courtney Shaw slammed 11 kills.
Marist never trailed in the opening set, going on a 6-2 run when the Highlanders got within a point.
26 of the 27 ties in the match came in the next two sets. The Red Foxes found themselves down 15-13 in the second frame only to go on a 9-5 run in which they forced four NJIT attack errors. There were three lead changes in the final set before a pair of Lahey kills ended the match and gave Marist its second sweep of the season.
Senior Danica Vukotic led the Highlanders' attack with 15 kills and NJIT jumped for 10 blocks as a team in the match.
Sideout percentage was a key factor in the match, as Marist would finish with a mark of .670 compared to NJIT's .610 average.
The Red Foxes will begin a four-match road trip against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Rider at 1 p.m. Sept. 26.
