POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Red-shirt junior guard Khallid Hart scored his 1,000th career point, but the Marist men's basketball team was defeated by Canisius, 92-83, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Saturday night at McCann Arena.
Hart became the 30th player in program history to score his 1,000th point in a Marist uniform. The milestone came on a free throw with 6:01 left in the game. He finished with 26 points, five rebounds and four assists.
“I want to publicly congratulate Khallid on scoring 1,000 points,” head coach Mike Maker said following the game. “I'm running out of words to describe his play and him as a person.”
Hart paced four double-digit scorers for the Red Foxes. Freshman forward/guard Kristinn Palsson had a career-high 18 on the strength of six three-pointers. Freshman forward Isaiah Lamb tied his career high with 15 points, and freshman guard Brian Parker had 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting, a career-high eight assists and four rebounds. Senior center Eric Truog hauled in a game-high seven rebounds.
Canisius had five double-digit scorers, paced by Kassius Robertson with a game-high 27. He was followed by Chris Atkinson with 15, Malcom McMillan with 14, and Phil Valenti and Jermaine Crumpton with 12 apiece. McMillan tied Parker for the game high with eight assists.
Canisius shot .491 (28-for-57) from the field, .375 (9-for-24) from three-point range and .794 (27-for-34) from the free-throw line. Marist shot .468 (29-for-62) from the field, .429 (15-for-35) from three-point range and .588 (10-for-17) from the free-throw line.
The game included eight lead changes and four ties, although Canisius led for 35:11. The Golden Griffins hit their first four shots from the field, scored 13 points in the first 2:39, and jumped out to an early seven-point lead. Canisius led by seven on three occasions in the first six minutes before Marist took the lead on the strength of a 10-0 run, which included two three-pointers by Hart. The Golden Griffins battled back and took an eight-point lead with 1:05 left in the first half, but the Red Foxes cut their deficit to 43-42 at the half thanks to a three-pointer by Palsson and a four-point play by Lamb.
A layup by Parker 45 seconds into the second half gave Marist a 44-43 lead. However, exactly one minute later, a layup by Canisius' Phil Valenti put the Golden Griffins ahead 45-44, and they led the rest of the way. Canisius' biggest lead was 12 with 6:21 to play. Marist got as close as five twice in the final 30 seconds, both times coming on three-pointers by Palsson. However, the Golden Griffins pulled away by going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the last 24 seconds.
