HEMPSTEAD, New York – The Marist women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a 62-42 loss to the Hofstra Pride Friday evening at the Mack Sports Complex in Hempstead, New York.
Maura Fitzpatrick recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Allie Clement added 10 points and five rebounds, and the freshman duo of Hannah and Rebekah Hand combined for 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Red Foxes in the loss.
Hofstra jumped out to 22-8 lead by the end of the first quarter behind 10 points from Ashuanae Durant. Allie Clement had five points for the Red Foxes in the first half while Lovisa Henningsdottir chipped in the other three.
A 7-2 Marist run to start the second quarter cut the Pride's lead down to double digits. Hofstra responded with a three halfway through the period that pushed the Pride lead back to 12.
The Red Foxes then went off on another 6-1 run capped off by back-to-back layups by Maura Fitzpatrick to cut the Hofstra lead down to seven.
After outscoring Hofstra 16-8 in the second quarter the Red Foxes had cut the 14 point first quarter deficit down to six at the half.
A 5-0 run to start the third quarter by the Pride pushed the Red Foxes deficit back to double digits and would help keep Marist at bay for the remainder of the game. A near five minute stretch without a field goal and a 15-5 run spanning the end of the third and start of the fourth quarter sealed the game for the Pride.
Up next the Red Foxes travel to take on Rhode Island on Sunday, November 13th. Tip-off for the Red Foxes second road game of the season is 2 p.m.
