Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Red Foxes picked up their fifth win in a row on Wednesday with a 6-3 non-conference victory over the UMass Lowell River Hawks. Marist stands at 10-10 (3-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while UMass Lowell drops to 9-11 (0-3 America East).
Freshman Frankie Gregoire led the Red Foxes, going 1-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs while junior Greg Kocinski, senior co-captain Joey Aiola, junior Zachary Racusin and sophomore Chris Tracz all chipped in one hit and one RBI each.
Sophomore Tony Romanelli got his first start of the year and threw three innings, giving up three runs on five hits with four strike outs. Sophomore Spencer Bunting picked up his first win of the year, throwing four innings while giving up no runs on one hit with four strikeouts. Sophomore Mike Coss pitched one inning and gave up no runs on one hit and junior Ryan Thomas picked up his seventh save of the year, throwing one inning of no runs and no hits. With the save, Thomas tied Rob Ryan (2004-07) for first in program history with 24 career saves.
Junior Ian Strom led the River Hawks going 2-for-4 with one RBI on the afternoon.
UMass Lowell opened the scoring in the top of the third when sophomore Chris Ortega led off with a homer to left field. Two batters later, senior Joe Consolmango singled up the middle followed by a single from freshman Oscar Marchena and the River Hawks had men on first and third. Strom singled to right, scoring Consolmagno and UMass Lowell held the 2-0 lead. During the next at bat, Strom stole second and freshman Steve Passatempo grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Marchena and the River Hawks were up 3-0.
With only one hit so far in the game, the Red Foxes finally got some momentum going offensively and answered back in the bottom of the sixth. Senior John Brucker led things off with a single. Sophomore Andrew Rouse followed with a single and Marist had men on first and second. During the next at bat, Brucker advanced to third and Rouse to second on a wild pitch before senior co-captain Graham McIntire walked to load the bases. Kocinski was hit by a pitch, scoring Brucker and two batters later after a UMass Lowell pitching change, Gregoire laced a two run double to left center, scoring McIntire and Rouse and the game was tied 3-3. Aiola followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Kocinski and Racusin hit a single that bounced off the pitcher's glove, scoring Gregoire and the Red Foxes led 5-3. The River Hawks changed pitchers again and Tracz laced a singled under the first basemans glove that scored Aiola and Marist was ahead 6-3.
Neither team scored in the seventh or eighth and Thomas entered the game in the top of the ninth, throwing an easy 1-2-3 inning to secure the 6-3 win.
Up next, the Red Foxes will resume MAAC play with a three game series at Iona College. Marist will play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first pitch of Game 1 scheduled for 12 PM. Game 2 will begin roughly thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The Red Foxes will then wrap up the series with one game on Sunday at 12 PM.
