STONY BROOK, New York - The Marist men's lacrosse team went into an extra period for the fifth time this season and came out with a 10-9 win over no. 8 Stony Brook on April 12.
The Red Foxes improved to 6-5 overall and are 3-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play and Stony Brook moved to 9-3 overall and is 2-1 against America East competition this year.
Freshman Thomas Rago scored the game-winning goal from 12 yards out on a feed from junior J.D. Recor with 30.5 seconds remaining. Recor dished out five assists and sophomore Gannon Morrison netted four goals, all of which tied the contest.
Both sides went toe to toe the entire night on Long Island, as the game was tied following the first, second and fourth quarters, The first half was a defensive battle with redshirt sophomore Nick Nye going 4-for7 from the X and Marist killing two penalties. Both sides were tied at three after 30 minutes.
An unassisted score from senior Challen Rogers gave Stony Brook its largest lead with 7:56 left to go. The Red Foxes fought back with a 3-0 run capped by a goal from senior Joseph Radin with eight seconds remaining that put them ahead 6-5. He led Marist on both sides of the field with four goals and five ground balls on the night.
As the Seawolves were controlling the tempo in the fourth quarter, Marist gained possession with 41 seconds left and marched down the field before Morrison tied the score at nine with 13 seconds left in regulation. Rago's clincher gave Marist its fourth win over the Seawolves in the last five seasons.
Stony Brook senior Brody Eastwood picked up a hat trick while junior Jay Lindsay went 14-for-19 on faceoffs for the Seawolves and collected a game-high 11 ground balls. The Red Foxes won the turnover battle, 12-5.
Marist will host Manhattan on Senior Day. The Red Foxes' 2016 home finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. April 16.
