MADISON, New Jersey - The Marist men's lacrosse team (7-6, 3-2 MAAC) scored a season high 14 goals in a 14-10 victory at NJIT (1-13) on April 23 in the 2016 non-conference finale. Drew University hosted the contest.
Senior CLASS Award finalist Joseph Radin led all players with four goals. His score at 9:48 of the third quarter gave him 200 points for his career, a feat achieved by only Peter Cleary (217) and Paul Donohue (229).
Junior J.D. Recor racked up six points on three goals and three assists. In a strong overall underclassman performance, freshman Thomas Rago picked up his first career hat trick and sophomore Gannon Morrison dished out four assists.
Marist's scores came in shorts spurts, as Recor had netted all of goals on his first three shots by the 8:29 mark of the first quarter to help the Red Foxes break out to a 5-0 lead. The Highlanders went on a 5-2 run from that point on to cut into the deficit and make it 7-5 at halftime.
Four of the first five goals in the third frame went to Marist, as Radin put the Red Foxes up 11-6 with 8:46 to play. It was at this point that the Marist defense killed off a three-minute penalty to remain in control. Recor fed Rago with six seconds left in the third quarter and the Red Foxes held on in the final period despite a late run by the Highlanders.
Both sides did not score on the power play but Marist outshot NJIT 35-27. Freshman Aaron Forster was the Highlanders' top scorer with three goals while classmate Kevin Falteisek led the NJIT defensive unit with three of its eight caused turnovers.
The Red Foxes have clinched a berth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament with Siena's win at Manhattan and are currently second in the regular season standings.
Marist will travel to Michigan for its 2016 regular season finale; a bout with MAAC foe Detroit at 1 p.m. April 30.
