DETROIT - A 14-3 road win against the Detroit Titans on April 30 ended the Marist men's lacrosse team's 2016 regular season on a high note.
The Red Foxes concluded their campaign 8-6 overall, including 4-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, and earned the no. 2 seed entering the postseason tournament. Marist will play no. 3 Monmouth, which defeated Siena in overtime, in the MAAC semifinal May 5 in Hamden, Connecticut.
Eight different Red Foxes scored in the game and five hit the back of the net multiple times. Redshirt sophomore Brian Corrigan made 16 saves in between the pipes, picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers. He led a stout Marist defensive unit that held Detroit to 1-for-5 on the man up.
Marist's offense stormed out of the gate to get all of the seven goals in the first half. Junior J.D. Recor scored his first of three goals in the first quarter to notch a point for the 26th consecutive contest. By the end of the second quarter, classmate John Vigh had three points on two goals and an assist.
Detroit scored its first goal at the 8:21 mark of the third quarter, but the Red Foxes had a 10-2 cushion by the end of the third quarter. Three goals were scored in the final 33 seconds of the contest as freshman Derik Mango and senior Ryan Cook got on the board.
10 different players notched a point in the regular season finale with Vigh and Recor each racking up a game-high five. Marist outshot the Titans, 41-35.
Junior Ben Gjokaj wnet 12-for-18 on faceoffs for Detroit (2-10, 2-4 MAAC) and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls.
