ALBANY, New York – The Marist men's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a 2-2 tie against the University of Albany Great Danes.Â
Co-captains Kevin Kappock and Simon Lund Jorgensen notched the tallies for the Red Foxes in the second half while junior Mark Rajovic finished the night with seven saves in goal.Â
It was a tough game coming off preseason" said head coach Matt Viggiano. "It was a good team, the defending American East champions and preseason number one and coming into their house and getting a result was a good thing for the team and builds some character. The guys gutted it out. Obviously there were some things that we could do better but for a first game the effort was definitely there."
Both teams came out in the opening half looking to get their season going on the right foot. It was Albany that had the first few chances to score as the Great Danes hit the cross bar from in close and had a goal called back for offsides in the opening minutes.
Following a scoreless first 45 minutes, Albany found the back of the net when Afonso Pinheiro found space down the right hand side, cut the ball into the box and found space into the right side netting for the 1-0 lead.
Just over 10 minutes later, the Red Foxes tied up the score when Kappock collected the ball in the top left corner of the box and ripped a shot low into the left corner to make it 1-1.
Marist was not done as just three minutes a service from the wing was deflected out of the box and right to the foot of Lund Jorgensen who one timed a blast into the top right corner for the 2-1 lead.
Down by one goal, the Great Danes pressed for the equalizer and with just under seven minutes left, a throw in from the right sideline found the head of Nico Solabarrieta and floated into the far corner to even the score at 1-1.
After 90 minutes couldn't decided a winner, the two teams headed into two ten minute sudden death overtime periods. Both sides generated several chances for the winner but were unable to find the final touch and the final whistle blew with the score tied 2-2.Â
Up next, the Red Foxes return to Tenney Stadium for their 2016 home opener against Hartwick College on Tuesday, Aug. 30th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM.Â
