BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania – The Marist women's soccer team fell to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 3-0 Wednesday evening in non-conference action at the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. With the loss the Red Foxes move to 1-2 on the season while Lehigh improves to 2-0-1.
The Red Foxes again found themselves behind the eight-ball after Lehigh struck first six minutes into the game. A rocket shot from outside the box by Lehigh's Adrian Vitello found the upper part of the net and put the Mountain Hawks ahead.
Lehigh would dominate the rest of the first half from there, ending the period leading Marist 11-4 in shots, 6-1 in shots on goal, and 7-3 in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Makala Foley came up big in net for the Red Foxes again, thwarting numerous Lehigh chances including an acrobatic punch over the bar in the 16th minute and three consecutive one vs. one situations towards the end of the half.
Marist's best chance to tie came in the 57th minute after a corner led to a back post header from Brianna Robinson. Her header went just wide narrowly missing the back of the open net, keeping Lehigh's one-goal lead intact.
In the 71st minute, after some sustained pressure from Marist throughout the second half, Lehigh pounced on a counterattack chance and a misplay by the Red Foxes defense.
Lehigh's Tori Pantaleo sprinted down field to apply the pressure, was able to dribble around Foley, and then knocked it home for the commanding 2-0 lead. Pantaleo added another goal in the 80th minute, slamming the door for Lehigh.
Up next, Marist heads home for the first game of Sunday's Marist Soccer double-header featuring both the men's and women's teams. The women are up first as they take on the University of Albany at 1 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. The men follow at 7 p.m. with a matchup against Army West Point.
