ITHACA, New York -  The Marist volleyball team evened the match early on, but ultimately fell to James Madison 3-1 to begin the Cornell Invitational on Sept. 2.
Three of the four sets had the same score, as the match began the way it ended0---with a 25-15 Dukes win. Marist won the second set 25-15, but fell in the third frame 25-19. James Madison was 75th in Division I in last year's RPI rankings.Â
Marist senior Amanda Schlegel put up a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs while 11 kills from freshman Megan Fergus led the Marist attack. Senior Lexi Millington sprawled for 20 of Marist's 61 digs on the evening.
The Red Foxs rebounded from a tough first set and began stringing points together with an 11-5 run in the second stanza. Two service aces from freshman Nikki DeSerpa powered the scoring spree, which forced the Dukes to use their two timeouts. Millington's pair of service aces and the Red Foxes' hitting percentage increasing led to a deadlock in the match.Â
James Madison's dominance in front of the net ultimately decided the outcome, as the Dukes never looked back from a 13-7 lead in the third set. JMU senior Kelly Robinson jumped for three of her 11 blocks in this stretch along with three more kills.
Senior Janey Goodman slammed a match-high 17 kills and the Dukes ended up hitting .314 and posting a .680 sideout percentage on their way to a victory.Â
The Red Foxes will compete in two matches on the second and final day of the Cornell Invitational on Sept. 3. They will take on Colgate at 1 p.m. and battle the host Big Red at 7 p.m.
