ITHACA, New York - In a battle that featured 21 ties and 12 lead changes, the Marist volleyball team (0-6) fell to the Cornell Big Red (2-1), 3-1, to end the Cornell Invitational on Sept. 3.Â
Cornell needed extra points at both ends of the match to pick up the victory. It won the first two sets 30-28 and 25-21, respectively, before Marist continued the contest with a 25-20 victory in the third frame. Despite a late rally from the Red Foxes, Cornell stole the match in a 26-24 fourth set.
Marist senior captain Lexi Millington dove for a match-high 30 digs and was named to the All-Tournament Team. She had 69 digs, seven assists and three service aces in the three matches.
Freshman Nikki DeSerpa posted team highs with 15 kills and a pair of service aces while classmate Megan Fergus slammed 15 kills as well.
Both sides traded points for most of the first set, which included a pair of four-point runs from Marist. Fergus' kills in front maintained the Red Foxes lead, but the Big Red were finally able to reach the two-point cushion.
Trailing by as many as five points in the second set, a service ace from DeSerpa cut the Cornell lead to 22-21. The Big Red once again finished off strong however.
Marist caught fire near the end of the third set and went on a 13-3 run to end the third stanza to stay alive. Three kills from junior Ashton Korona highlighted the scoring spree. The Red Foxes charged through the final frame and even had an 18-9 lead with the help of 13 kills. Cornell took back the night by earning 17 of the next 23 points and winning the match.Â
Both teams were nearly even in each statistical category, but Cornell outhit Marist .175 to .156. Junior Emily Wemhoff got the kill to seal the win for the Big Red and led her squad with 13. Â
The Red Foxes will wrap up regular season tournament play at the Florida Gulf Coast University Homewood Suites Classic next weekend. They will play South Alabama (10 a.m.) and Indiana (2:30 p.m.) on Sept. 9 and face off against the host Eagles at 10 a.m. Sept. 10. Â
