Restrepo Advances At ITA Regional Tourney

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - The Marist men's tennis team continued on with play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) regional tournament held in New Haven, Connecticut Friday afternoon.

The Red Foxes competed in multiple singles and doubles matches in the main draw and a win for Javier Restrepo in the round of 64 moves him along to the round of 32 held on Saturday. Restrepo's win keeps the Red Foxes alive as he will represent 1 of the 13 schools remaining out of the 33 teams entered in the tournament. Restrepo is also the last player from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) remaining in the draw.

Restrepo picked up a tough three set win over Drexel's Sinan Orhan, winning the first set 6-2 before dropping the second set 6-4. Restrepo closed out the match with a 6-3 win in the final set. Rudolf Kurz also played a singles match but fell against tough competition from Yale, 6-3, 6-2. In other singles action, Lars Schouten fell to Brown's Peter Litsky, 6-3, 6-4, and Gianlucca Massa dropped his match to Penn's Jeff Zucker, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles play Restrepo teamed up with Schouten but were defeated by Cornell's Evan Bynoe and Daniel Grunberger, 8-2.

"I was very pleased and proud of the way Rudi played against Yale's number one player," said head coach Tim Smith. "I also gained some valuable information watching our second round doubles match and I would like to give kudos to Javi on advancing to the round of 32."

Restrepo will continue play on Saturday, October 21st in the round of 32, if he were to win that match he would play again on Saturday with another chance to advance further.
