Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls 3-2 at Quinnipiac in 2OT

HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Marist men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 2OT loss at the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday afternoon.

With the defeat, the Red Foxes fall to 7-8-0 (3-4-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) on the season.

SUMMARY:

The Bobcats got on the board first just 1:32 into the game when a free kick was sent into the box and found a Quinnipiac head that directed the ball into the back of the net. Marist answered exactly 35 minutes later when sophomore Samad Bounthong's shot hit the post but freshman Allen Gavilanes was there to put away the rebound and even the score at 1-1.

The Red Foxes took the lead with 18 minutes left in regulation when Gavilanes collected a loose ball outside the box and found the top left corner for the 2-1 advantage. With 7:10 left in the game, a Marist clear deflected off the referee and gave a Bobcat player a clear shot that he put into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.

With the game in overtime, the Red Foxes had a chance to win when a ball into the box found Bounthong but his header went wide.

After the first overtime ended with the two teams still tied 2-2, the game entered a second and final overtime. With roughly five minutes left in the game, Quinnipiac carried the ball into its offensive zone and found space down the left side. An attempted Marist tackle deflected the ball toward the end line and the Bobcats collected and found an open player in the box who slotted it inside the bottom left corner for the game winner.

KEY STATS:
  • Quinnipiac outshot the Red Foxes 25-13 in shots and 13-3 in shots on goal
  • The Bobcats had 6 corner kicks to Marist's 5
  • The Red Foxes finished with 10 saves to the Bobcats 1
GAME NOTES:
  • Gavilanes' two goals marks his first multi-goal game of his career and gives him points in three straight games and 10 of 15 games overall this season
  • Rajovic's 10 saves was his most this season and was tied for the second most in his career (11 – at Canisius 10/12/16)
QUOTE:

"To say that result was unjust would be an understatement. We got a deserved lead late and were seeing the game out. Unfortunately, a fortuitous bounce off the referee went their way and allowed them to equalize. We lacked some legs in OT after the midweek trip to Niagara while they were on their bye and gave up one late. We will keep fighting to the end and continue to have the belief that with hard work the bounces will go our way." – head coach Matt Viggiano.

UP NEXT:

Next up, the Red Foxes return home and square off against the Canisius Golden Griffins at Tenney Stadium on Wednesday (7 p.m.)
