Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Falls to Iona 1-0 in Overtime

NEW ROCHELLE, New York – The Marist men's soccer suffered its third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference loss of the season with a 1-0 OT loss at the Iona Gaels on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Red Foxes stand at 5-7 (1-3 MAAC) currently.

SUMMARY:

With both teams looking to get back on track, the opening 45 minutes were all about defense. The Gaels produced the only scoring opportunities but senior goalie Mark Rajovic made several key saves to send the game to halftime scoreless.

The second half started much like the first, with Iona generating the majority of pressure but again Rajovic was up to the task to keep the game 0-0. With 18 minutes left in regulation, Marist countered on an errant Gael pass and freshman Justin Jaime collected a pass at the top of the box and ripped a shot toward the bottom left corner but the Iona goalie made the diving save. Just over six minutes later, freshman Allen Gavilanes hit a shot from the left side that was dropping toward the goal but was knocked over the cross bar and out of play by the Gael keeper.

With the game scoreless after 90 minutes, the two teams headed to sudden death overtime. Seven minutes into the extra period, a ball from the left side found sophomore Ernest Mitchell on the right side of the box who fired a shot toward the far post but again the Iona goalie made a diving save. With time winding down in the first overtime, the ball bounced into the Red Foxes 18 yard box with a scrum ensuing before a Gael player ran onto the loose ball and fired it home for the 1-0 win.

KEY STATS:
  • Iona outshot Marist 13-9 and 8-3 in shots on goal
  • The Red Foxes did not record a shot on goal until the 72nd minute
  • Rajovic made 7 saves on the day while the Gael goalie made 3
  • Iona had 6 corners to Marist's 2
GAME NOTES:
  • Rajovic's 7 saves ties for second most in one game this season
  • Gavilanes led the team with 3 shots, marking the fifth straight game he has at least tied for first on the team
QUOTE:

"It was a typical MAAC game. A bounce one way or the other and its a good result. This is what this conference is, tightly contested games. I thought it was an even game and obviously we didn't make the most of our opportunities. They got a good one and they finished." -- head coach Matt Viggiano.

UP NEXT:

The Red Foxes now return home to face off against the Monmouth Hawks on Wednesday, Oct. 11th (7 p.m.) at Tenney Stadium.
