Volleyball Opens Play in MAAC Tournament

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut – The Marist volleyball team will enter the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship for the fifth consecutive season.

The Red Foxes head into the tournament as the #4 seed at 14-15 (11-7 MAAC) and will play the #5 seed Rider Broncs at George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall on the campus of Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT on Friday, Nov. 17th at 8 PM. With a win, Marist will play the #1 Fairfield Stags on Saturday, Nov. 18th at 2 PM in the semi-final round. If the Red Foxes are again victorious, they will then play the winner of the #3 Iona College Gaels/#6 Quinnipiac Bobcats vs the #2 Niagara Purple Eagles in the Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 19th at 2 PM.

LAST TIME OUT:

Marist wrapped up the regular season last weekend with a tough 3-2 loss to the Iona Gaels on Saturday and then ended the season with a 3-1 win at the Manhattan Jaspers on Sunday.

ALL-MAAC SELECTIONS:

Sophomore Nikki DeSerpa was named to the All-MAAC First Team and senior Kelsey Ediger was named to the All-MAAC Second Team as was voted by the league's head coaches and announced during the conference's postseason award show on Thursday night.

1,000 KILL CLUB MEMBER: Ediger recorded her 1,000th career kill in the season's final match at Manhattan on 11/12 and comes into the tournament in seventh place in program history. She is just 14 away from sixth place and former teammate Kelsey Lahey (2012-15). Ediger is also seventh in program history with 935 career digs and is just 65 away from becoming just the second player in program history to record 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs (Joanna Foss).
 
TOP HALF OF THE MAAC: The Red Foxes rank in the top half of the MAAC entering the tournament in several statistical categories including first in blocks per set (2.06), fourth in opponent hitting percentage (.187) and
fifth in hitting percentage (.173).
 
Individually, DeSerpa ranks third in the conference in kills per set (3.23) and points per set (3.67). Junior Taylor van der Biezen is third in the MAAC in assists per set at 9.04 and fifth in service aces per set (0.42). Senior Ashton Korona is first in the conference in blocks per set (1.05) and junior Katie Brierley is seventh in the MAAC in digs per set (3.23).
 
SCOUTING THE BRONCS:
 
Rider enters the tournament as the #5 seed at 17-14 (10-8 MAAC). Marist and the Broncs split two regular season matchups with the Red Foxes prevailing 3-2 at Rider and the Broncs winning 3-1 at Marist.
 
SCOUTING THE STAGS:
 
Fairfield comes into the tournament as the #1 seed at 23-6 (18-0 MAAC). The Stags took both matches from the Red Foxes in the regular season, winning 3-0 in Poughkeepsie and 3-1 in Fairfield.
 
SCOUTING THE PURPLE EAGLES:
 
Niagara is the #2 seed in the MAAC Championship and enters the tournament at 18-9 (14-4 MAAC). During the regular season, the Purple Eagles beat Marist in both matches, prevailing 3-2 at Niagara and 3-1 in Poughkeepsie.
 
SCOUTING THE GAELS:
 
Iona earned the #3 seed with a record of 14-17 (11-7 MAAC). The Gaels won both matches against the Red Foxes with a 3-1 victory at Marist and a 3-2 win at Iona.
 
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS:
 
Quinnipiac enters the tournament as the #6 seed with a record of 10-21 (9-9 MAAC). The Red Foxes won both matches against the Bobcats during the regular season with a 3-0 victory at Quinnipiac and a 3-1 win at home.
