SAN DIEGO, California – The Marist football team wrapped up the 2017 season falling to the San Diego Torreros, 35-7, Saturday afternoon at the Walter J. Zable field at Torrero Stadium. The Torreros, after clinching the Pioneer Football League title a week ago, finish the season a perfect 8-0.
SUMMARY
San Diego would jump out to a two-score lead after 10 minutes of play in the first quarter before a 77 yard strike from
Jacob Hallenbeck to
Juston Christian would cut the Torreros' deficit in half. Hallenbeck starting in place of injured
Mike White, made his second career start and performed admirably, finishing the game 13-for-28 with 240 yards passing and a touchdown. The long strike pushed
Juston Christian over the 1,000 yard mark for the season, just the third time a Red Fox has achieved that mark in program history.
After trading stops, the Torreros would extend their lead to two touchdowns just before halftime and then score first in the third quarter to extend the lead more. The Torreros would ice the game with under six minutes to go in the fourth and push their lead to 35-7.
SCORING DRIVES
- San Diego marched down the field and capped off a 10 play, 69 yard drive with a one yard touchdown less than three minutes into the contest.
- Another long drive for the Torreros, this time 5:23 and 12 plays saw another one yard score for San Diego to go up 14-0.
- Marist would charge back after the 77 yard strike from Hallenbeck to Christian cut the deficit in half with 2:13 to go in the first quarter.
- A six play, 20 yard drive after a turnover by Marist ended with seven-yard pass from Lawrence to Priest that put the Torreros up 21-7 heading into halftime.
- Torreros struck first in the second half after an 11 yard rush by Martinez put San Diego up three scores with 8:07 left in the third.
- The last points of the game came off a 12 yard pass to Priest which made the score 35-7 in the Torreros' favor.
KEY STATS & NOTES
- The Red Foxes would outgain the Torreros in total yards 305-271 and in passing yards 240 to 119.
- In his final career game, Marcellus Calhoun would rush 17 times for 64 yards with a long of 24. Calhoun would also catch three passes for 15 yards
- Juston Christian would total three receptions for 105 yards including the 77 yard long that helped him eclipse the 1,000 yard mark on the season.
- Christian has had at least 100 receiving yards in 13 of his 30 career games.
- Lawrence Dickens in his homecoming game also snagged three receptions for 57 yards.
