NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Highlighted by a program win from
Gianlucca Massa, the Marist men's tennis team racked up wins during day one at the Connecticut State Open held in New Haven, Connecticut Friday morning and afternoon.
"This is the best we have played as a team all fall. We had wins over six different conference including the ACC, Big East, IVY, AAC, NEC, and MAAC," said head coach
Tim Smith. "The fact that we won five singles and four doubles the first day for the first time this year shows that we have the depth that I thought we had in our lineup. Special kudos to Gianlucca who beat Yale's No.1 ranked player in what I would have to say is probably one of the five best wins in program history."
Playing from the 1A bracket, Massa squared off with Yale's Justin King. The match came down to a breaker and trailing 8-7, Massa rallied with two aces and then closed out the match with a powerful backhand down the line.
In the second match for the Red Foxes in the 1A bracket,
Javier Restrepo dropped a match to Boston Colleg'es Gereon Heitmann, 6-1, 6-3 and in the 1B bracket,
Lars Schouten fell to SJU's Luka Sucevic, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0.
On the 2A side of the board,
Justin Chanthalangsy picked up a 7-6, 6-3 win over Fairfield's Lewis Edwards and in 2B Chris Gladden won in straight sets over UConn's Yili Zheng, 6-3, 6-3.
In 3A,
Paulo Siracusa fell to Yale's Nate Brown, 6-1, 6-2 and in 3B
Jan Dernic picked up a 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 win over SJU's Alex Roszkowski. To close out singles play,
Carlos Moreno beat out Sacred Heart's Chris Sause, 6-2, 7-5.
The Red Foxes also picked up some big wins in doubles play as Restrepo and Gladden teamed up to defeat SJU's Vukicevic and Roszkowski, 6-1. Massa and Chanthalangsy moved on against BC's Mukai and Grasel and then defeated SJU's Crapcenco and Sucevic, 7-6, for their second win of the day.
Wrapping up the Red Foxes wins for the day, Dernic and Schouten teamed up for the 7-5 victory over BC's Mackinnon and Conigliaro.
Men's tennis returns to action Saturday, looking to continue its hot play at the Connecticut State Open.
