USAFA, Colorado - The Marist men's lacrosse team traveled to no. 14 Air Force and came out with a 10-4 victory Feb. 18. The Red Foxes moved to 2-0 on the young 2017 season after defeating a nationally ranked program for the second consecutive season. Â
Redshirt junior Brian Corrigan made 16 saves and the Marist defense held the Falcons to 0-for-6 on extra man opportunities. Senior J.D. Recor and junior Gannon Morrison each had a hat trick to power the offense. Recor also picked up three ground balls. Â
Marist controlled the tempo from the outset, winning the first four faceoffs of the contest and building a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter. The Falcons came back to within three goals in the following frame before senior John Vigh scored his second of two goals off feeds from Recor with seven seconds remaining in the second quarter to build a 6-2 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. Â Â
The contest got physical in the third period as Air Force was awarded three extra man opportunities, but the Falcons continued to get denied by Corrigan and the rest of his defensemen. Senior Frankie Brier put up team highs with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers to preserve the Marist advantage down the stretch. Morrison and Recor got man up goals to pad the lead in the final quarter, which grew to as much as seven scores. Â
Falcons junior Nick Hruby tallied team highs of two goals and five ground balls while classmate Chris Walsch racked up four points on a goal and three assists. Air Force (1-2) outshot Marist 38-25 and had a 33-17 edge in ground balls. The Falcons' defense also converted on all 14 of its clear attempts. Only 20 of Air Force's shots came on goal however. Â
Marist went 2-for-2 on the power play to remain a perfect 5-for-5 so far this season. The Red Foxes last defeated a ranked opponent when they beat no. 8 Stony Brook in overtime on April 12, 2016 on Long Island.
The Red Foxes will continue their four-game road swing at Princeton on Feb. 21. Opening faceoff is set for 6 p.m.
