PRINCETON, New Jersey - The Marist men's lacrosse team fell to Ivy League opponent Princeton, 10-6, in a midweek tilt Feb. 21. The Tigers remained unbeaten at 2-0 and the Red Foxes went to 2-1.
Junior Gannon Morrison scored a pair of goals and J.D. Recor dished out three assists to keep their point streaks going. Freshman Peyton Smith was dominant in the faceoff X, winning 11 of 12, and he collected a team-high eight ground balls.
The game's five goals in the opening quarter were the most in any four periods of the contest. Redshirt junior Nick Nye's goal with 4:58 left in the first quarter put Marist in front 3-1, but the Princeton defense held Marist off the scoreboard from that point until the third quarter.
Marist won all four faceoffs in the third period to stay in the contest. Freshman Michael Smith broke the scoring drought with his third goal of the year, with classmate Joe Tierney picking up an assist for the third straight game. Michael Smith's score cut the Marist deficit to 7-4 with 6:52 to play, but the Tigers would extend their lead to five before the final quarter.
Princeton senior Zach Currier delivered in all aspects of the game with a hat trick, a game-high 11 ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Gavin McBride racked up five points and junior Tyler Blaisdell made 11 saves. Â
On defense the Red Foxes won 14 of 19 faceoffs and held their opponent without a man up goal for the second straight game as the Tigers went 0-for-5. Princeton ended up winning the caused turnover battle 13-4 and collected 41 ground balls however. Â Â
The Red Foxes will conclude a four-game road trip when they play at Binghamton on Feb. 25. Opening faceoff is slated for 1 p.m.
