POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team will have four captains for the 2017 season: running back Marcellus Calhoun, linebacker Ruben Avalos III, junior safety Wesley Beans, and quarterback Mike White.

Calhoun is returning for a second year as captain, and has been named Pioneer Football League Honorable Mention each of the last two years. He has also led the Red Foxes in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns the last two years. Calhoun enters this season with 1,253 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns in his career. He will be a fifth-year senior this upcoming season.

Avalos will also be a fifth-year senior in 2017. His playing time and production have increased every season, and he started all 11 games for the Red Foxes last season. Avalos finished third on the team with 70 tackles, and also registered five tackles for loss (fourth on the team), one sack, and one forced fumble.

Beans will be a red-shirt junior this upcoming season. In 2016, his first season as a starter, he led the Red Foxes in tackles (77), solo tackles (52), and interceptions (six). He also finished with four pass break-ups, three tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Beans earned Second Team All-PFL honors last year.

White is also entering is red-shirt junior season, and was named Second Team All-PFL in 2016. He has been the Red Foxes' starting quarterback the last two seasons, and has thrown for 5,495 yards and 35 touchdowns in his career. Last year, White set the single-season program records for completions (203) and passing yards (2,931).

The Marist football team opened spring practice on Wednesday, and will return to the practice field on Friday. The program's Spring Game is set for Saturday, April 22 at 6 p.m.
