POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Keegan Wilkinson became the fastest coach in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference history to reach 50 career wins when the Red Foxes took down Holy Cross, 8-5, on March 25.
Former Siena Head Coach Brian Brecht accomplished the feat in 93 games while Wilkinson reached the mark in his 86th contest on the sidelines today. The Red Foxes improved to 5-4 on the season while the Crusaders fell to 2-7.
Redshirt junior Brian Corrigan set a career high with 19 saves in the contest, good for a .792 save percentage. A catalyst on offense, senior John Vigh recorded a hat trick on seven shots and junior Gannon Morrison dished out three assists.
The Crusaders jumped out to an early advantage, but strong defense and six saves from Corrigan in the opening quarter kept the score close. Redshirt junior Nick Nye and Vigh both netted goals in the period to trim the Holy Cross lead to one.
Senior J.D. Recor dished out another assist for Marist in the second, setting up freshman Michael Smith for a goal. The Red Foxes' offense had ripped 18 shots by halftime and Marist trailed 4-3.
A bounce shot by Vigh tied the score at four at the 12:31 mark of the third quarter and was the first of three straight scores for Marist. Corrigan continued to be a vacuum in goal, stopping five of the six shots that came his way. Marist took its first lead of the game with a goal off the stick of freshman Jon Constant and never trailed again.
Michael Smith put the Red Foxes up by two in the final seconds of the third quarter and the Marist defense buckled down to hold the Crusaders scoreless in the fourth.
Both teams were even with 34 shots, but the Crusaders led with 24 shots on goal to Marist's 18. The Red Foxes caused six turnovers and led in ground balls 24-20.
Holy Cross senior Sean Kirkpatrick had a hat trick and freshman Jonathan Tesoro made 10 saves in net.
Marist will compete against MAAC opponents the rest of the regular season. Its next game will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 1, when it hosts Monmouth in a rematch of the MAAC semifinals the last two seasons. Â Â
