Box Score 2 JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – Behind a combined 40 hits and 44 runs, the Marist baseball team won its fourth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series with 17-6 and 27-7 wins over the Saint Peter's Peacocks on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Foxes' 17 runs scored in Game 1 was a season high and with that victory, head coach Chris Tracz picked up his 200th career coaching victory.
In Marist's 27-7 victory in Game 2, the Red Foxes scored the most runs in a single game in program history since at least 2001 and had a season high 23 hits which was also the most the team has recorded in one game in program history since March 19, 2010 vs Temple (25). The Red Foxes also scored the most runs in one inning (12) by the team since 2016 when Marist scored 14 in a single inning vs Manhattan on April 16th.
In the day's first game, sophomore Randy Taveras led the Red Foxes, tying his career high with three hits, one run scored, a three run home run and a career high five RBI that also tied a team season high by a single player. Sophomore Frankie Gregoire had a huge game as well, finishing with a career and team season high five hits, a career high four runs scored that also tied the team's season high by one player, a two run home run and three RBI. Redshirt senior Matt Pagano chipped in two hits, a career high four runs scored and tied his career high with three RBI. Redshirt junior Greg Kocinski finished by tying his career high with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI, junior Matt Iantosca and freshman Patrick Lightner each picked up a hit and one RBI and senior Tyler Kirkpatrick had two runs scored and one RBI. Junior Andrew Rouse finished with a hit and a career high three runs scored and sophomore Anthony Lazar picked up a hit and one run scored.
On the mound, senior Sean Keenan got the start and threw four innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts and freshman Austin Phillips threw two thirds of an inning, surrendering two runs on two hits. Junior Spencer Bunting picked up his first win, pitching three and one third innings no runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts and freshman Will Van Beusekom threw an inning and gave up no runs on no hits.
In the second game, Kocinski finished by tying his career high with three hits for the second consecutive game and extended his hit streak to four games, tied his career high and set a season high with three runs scored, hit his first career grand slam and had a career high five RBI. Iantosca picked up three hits, a season high two runs scored and a career high five RBI. Gregoire had another monstrous game, finishing with three hits to extend his hitting streak to six games, three runs scored, a two run home run, the second time this season he's homered in back-to-back games and a career high four RBI. Taveras picked up a career high four hits, a career high four runs scored and had three RBI. Rouse finished with a career high four hits, a career high four runs scored and tied his career high with three RBI. Lightner picked up two hits, a career high three runs scored and tied his career high with two RBI. Lazar finished with two hits, extending his hit streak to four games, tied his career high with three runs scored and had two RBI. Freshman Matt Rubayo tied his career high with one hit, tied his career high with one run scored and had a career high two RBI. Pagano finished with two runs scored and one RBI, Kirkpatrick had one hit and one run scored and freshman Fletcher Szabo tied his career high with one run scored.
On the hill, junior Charlie Jerla picked up his sixth win, throwing five innings, while giving up five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Brandon Bonomo pitched one inning and gave up one run on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts and freshman Skyler Pichardo threw one inning and gave up no runs on no hits with one strikeout.
GAME 1:
Marist scored three in the first inning on a Gregoire RBI single and twice on an error by the right fielder.
The Peacocks answered with two in the bottom of the inning on a double, wild pitch, RBI double and an RBI single.
In the top of the third, the Red Foxes added three more runs on a Kirkpatrick sac fly and on RBI singles by Pagano and Lightner.
Saint Peter's scored four in the bottom on an RBI double, a sac fly and two RBI singles.
In the next inning, Marist scored five runs on a Gregoire two run home run and a Taveras three run home run.
Two innings later the Red Foxes added three more runs on a Kocinski RBI double and RBI singles by Taveras and Iantosca.
In their last at bat, Marist scored three more runs on a Pagano two RBI triple and a Taveras RBI single.
GAME 2:
For the second consecutive game, the Red Foxes struck in the top of the first inning on a Gregoire two run home run.
One inning later, Marist added 12 runs on a Rouse two RBI double, a Gregoire RBI double, a Kocinski RBI single, a Pagano sac fly, an Iantosca RBI ground out, a Lightner RBI single, a Lazar RBI double, a Rouse RBI double and a Gregoire RBI single.
For the third consecutive inning the Red Foxes scored with an Iantosca RBI single and a Lightner RBI fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the third the Peacocks got on the board with a solo home run.
Marist made it four straight innings with runs in the top of the fourth when they scored four on a Taveras RBI double, an Iantosca two RBI double and a Lazar RBI single.
Saint Peter's pushed across four runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single and a three RBI double.
In the top of the fifth the Red Foxes scored for the fifth straight inning with a Taveras RBI single.
In the top of the sixth a Rubayo RBI hit by pitch, a Kocinski grand slam, a Taveras RBI triple, an Iantosca RBI single and a Rubayo RBI single gave Marist runs in six straight innings.
Up next, the the two teams will close out the series with a single nine inning game on Sunday at 1 PM.
